Sprint mulling switch from WiMax to LTE for 4G

20/05/2010 Interestingly enough, when we were speaking to Sprint (NYSE: S) about the EVO 4G and mentioned “WiMax,” the third-largest carrier was quick to make sure we knew it was referring to it as “4G.” Now, we’re hearing rumblings that the company is evaluating switching from WiMax to Long-Term Evolution technology for its 4G network.
According to Light Reading, the company is sending out a request for proposal that evaluates LTE for its next-generation network.
“There’s nothing that prevents us from … moving to LTE,” said Kevin Packingham, senior VP of product and technology development at Sprint. “We’re doing a technology evaluation and making a decision on our core network and how we want to evolve that going forward.”Читать далее

Ну что а вот и вторая новость, которая укрепляет предыдущую новость о Clearwire и их планах относительно перехода на LTE взамен WiMax. Теперь вопрос как Sprint будет совмещать две конкурирующие технологии внутри своей сети? А может и не будут? Подождут пару лет, да потом одним махом и закроют часть с WiMax как только бабки отобьют. 🙂 Ну а сейчас Sprint уже должен начинать уменьшать долю телефонов с WiMax в своей сети и не выводить на свой рынок новые модели с поддержкой WiMax. Поживем-увидим.

05/05/2010 Clearwire said today it’s changed the terms of an agreement it had with Intel, one of its largest investors, that could lead the way for Clearwire to dump WiMAX and switch to LTE. On its first-quarter financial results call today, an executive with Clearwire said the new terms allow either party to exit the agreement — which had until now forced Clearwire to use WiMAX through Nov. 28, 2011 — with just 30 days notice.Читать далее

Вот как объяснить такое заявление с учетом того, что половина компании принадлежит Sprint? А Sprint это что?… Это 100% WiMax. Надо полагать, что там есть какие-то подводные течения, невидимые нам. И хотя с прибылью и у Sprint и у Clearwire более чем в порядке, но что-то заставляет их делать такие ходы, которые на первый взгляд в данный момент не обоснованы.
